PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
by
PATRICK SCULLIN
I hate volunteering. My wife’s the volunteer.
I’m the I’d-rather-not-get-involved-but-you-have-a-
good-time-changing-the-world-and-let-me-know-
how-that-turns-out-for-you kind
of guy.
But once in a great while, my do-gooder
genes kick into gear and tickle my dormant
Catholic guilt genes and I catch myself
saying “yes” when asked to volunteer.
I usually regret my stupid lips when this
happens, but what the hell, maybe we can
change the world and do some good.
So here I am, your reluctant new leader
and I want to state my agenda: The Atlanta
Ad Club will offer its members value through
informative, engaging and stimulating
programs and activities so members can
meet others, share ideas, form new friendships
and have a good time (yes, fun is permitted––
providing proper paperwork is filled-out).
That’s it. This
Club’s only reason for being is to make
its members’ lives richer. To do
that, we have some terrific programs scheduled
with our Atlanta
Ad Agency Leader Round Table Tuesday
night at Manuel’s Tavern, plus upcoming
speaker programs with ad legends Alex
Bogusky, Gerry Graf, Stan Richards and
others.
We’re co-sponsoring the first ever Atlanta
Integrated Marketing Summit to keep you
up to date on the latest and greatest
(get your tickets while they’re hot).
We sponsor Agency Open Houses where you
can go into the belly of local agencies
and get their vibe (all the while slurping
drinks, nibbling, yakking and laughing).
We put on the ADDYs, the show honoring
the best work and angering the blood of
those who entered but didn’t receive recognition
because-the-judges-were-so-damn-idiotic-
they-failed-to-see-the-genius-of-your-work-
and-what-do-they-know-anyway?
The competition is a beautiful thing nonetheless.
We sponsor the annual Silver
Medal Award luncheon honoring a
local agency luminary who made Atlanta
advertising better and is an all around
good egg.
We’re also forming programs for the people
who’ll replace us, the students in the
ad programs at the many schools and universities
in this area.
Your membership gets you discounts to
all events plus lots of other stuff like
perks out the wazoo–– so for God’s sake,
join already!
Finally, thanks to all the members on
the Ad Club board for their support, hard
work and enthusiasm to make this Club
work. Special thanks to Thom Gonyeah,
the past president for his energy and
success in keeping this thing going strong,
and Garet Hayes for helping guide this
Club and making me look a little less
foolish.
Although I am your reluctant leader, let
me assure you this is not my Club–– it’s
yours . So please, make the sucker
work. Get involved, attend programs, get
to know people and enjoy yourself. It
won’t hurt. I promise.
One last thing: who’d
like to be president next year?
Thank you. I hope to see you soon.
Patrick Scullin
President,
Adman
